Diachrysia zosimi is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family(Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 32 to 42 millimeters, Diachrysia zosimi is a medium-sized butterfly from the subfamily of gold owls . The innermost root field of the forewings is brown, the adjoining root field up to the border area shimmers shiny green-yellow or golden-green depending on the angle of incidence of light. The species is similar to the butterflies of the brass owl species complex ( Diachrysia chrysitis ). With zosimi , however, the middle field is never broken, as is usually the case with the typical shape of the brass owl. If both brass-colored zones are connected by a brass-colored bridge, as with the Diachrysia tutti type, this bridge is usually narrower than with zosimi . Further distinguishing features: the hind wings of zosimi are lighter brown and have a brown wavy line in the middle, the abdomen of the moth is also very light brown, furry. On the head there is a clearly erect, very dark brown tuft of hair, followed at the end of the thorax by further tufts of dark brown hair staggered backwards.

egg

The egg is spherical, flattened at the poles and greenish-white in color. Before the caterpillar hatches, it turns darker green.

Caterpillar

The basic color of the caterpillars is yellow-green. They have slightly yellowish or whitish back and side back lines that are straight at first, but zigzag on the abdominal segments. The stigmas are outlined in light and finely dark.

Doll

The pupa is black-brown, but blue-green on the belly.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The main distribution of Diachrysia zosimi is in southern and eastern regions of Europe and neighboring areas, such as Ticino , northern Italy , Bulgaria , Hungary , Moravia , Poland and the Ukraine . In the German-speaking area, the species has spread since it first appeared in the middle of the twentieth century and is now found in various places in Lower Austria and Burgenland . The species is considered capable of migration . It prefers humid areas with lush vegetation.

Way of life

Diachrysia zosimi is nocturnal and also flies to artificial light sources . The females lay the eggs on the forage plant, from which the caterpillars hatch in autumn and then prefer to feed on the leaves of the Great Meadow Button ( Sanguisorba officinalis ). They overwinter and pupate mostly in May of the following year in a light, white web between the leaves of the forage plant. The moths fly in two generations from June to August, and in favorable areas in an incomplete third generation in September and October.
