Diada de Mallorca

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diada de Mallorca is a public holiday on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . The day that falls on September 12 each year reminds on the one hand of the special rights granted to Mallorca by King Jaume II on the same day in 1276 in the Carta Franqueses i privilegis del Regne de Mallorca , through which the independent Kingdom of Mallorca came into being the victory over the Moors in the battle of Porto Pi achieved by his predecessor King Jaume I on September 12, 1229 , the beginning of the conquest of the island.

Since the Majorcan public holiday is not a public holiday, normal work is carried out on this day. On the Diada de Mallorca , the houses of the communities are decorated with flags of the island colors. Ceremonies, parades, sports and music events are held. In Palma there is a parade of the Gigantes , the representation of giant figures from different places on the island, who move to the building of the island council.
