Diaethria clymena is a species of butterfly from the noble butterfly family(Nymphalidae). The species occurs in Central and South America . The first description was in 1775 by Pieter Cramer .
Appearance
The insides of the wings of Diaethria clymena are black, each with a blue stripe. An important distinguishing feature is the so-called eighty-eight (black on white background). These can be seen on both sides of the lower wings. One of the eights that make up the number seems a bit unsuccessful. Around eighty-eight are black rings. The upper wings visible in flight are red. At rest, the butterfly folds its wings together so that only the lower wings can be seen (on which the eighty-eight lies). The wingspan is 3 to 4 cm. The body is black (top) and striped white (bottom). There are no gender differences.
Occurrence
Diaethria clymena occurs in South America ( Guatemala via Peru to Brazil ).
