Diana Blumenfeld
Diana Blumenfeld (born 1903 in Warsaw ; died 1961 in New York City ) was a Yiddish-speaking singer and actress in Poland .
Life
Diana Blumenfeld was born in Warsaw to a Jewish family. She studied piano and acting in Warsaw. In 1923 she married the director Jonas Turkow and toured Poland with him and his Yiddish theater. She starred in the films Kties Chaf (1924) and In pojlisze welder (1929) and became popular as a singer of Yiddish songs.
During the time of the German occupation she lived in the Warsaw Ghetto . Mordechai Gebirtig gave her his newly written songs so that she could spread them in the ghetto. After the ghetto was liquidated, she was sent to the Majdanek concentration camp.
After World War II , she sang for the survivors. In 1945 she left Poland and went to the USA. She died in New York in 1961.
