Jonas Turkow (Yiddish יאנאס טורקאוו; born 1898 in Warsaw ; died 1988 in Tel Aviv ) was a Jewish - Polish theater director , director and actor. He survived the Warsaw Ghetto and wrote several books about it.

Life

Jonas was born in Warsaw in 1898 to a Jewish family. In 1916 he founded a Yiddish theater with his brother Zygmunt . He then played in the Herrfeld Brothers Theater in Berlin and, since 1917, in the Esther Rachel Kamińska Theater in Warsaw.

Since 1921 toured Poland with its own Yiddish theater. In 1923 he married the actress Diana Blumenfeld . Since 1924 he played in various films. In 1926 he took over the management of the Yiddish Theater in Kraków , and in the 1930s he headed the Cabaret Variety Theater in Kaunas .

In 1940 he came to the Warsaw Ghetto , after which he fought in the Polish underground. In 1947 he emigrated to the USA, in 1966 to Israel. In 1988 he died in Tel Aviv.

Jonas Turkow published several books about his life and the time of the German occupation of Poland . He identified 18 cases of collaboration between Jews and Germans. He supported survivors of the Shoah very intensively for a long time.

In 1980 Wiera Gran accused him of collaborating with the German occupation forces in her autobiography.
