Dick Mol (* 1955 in Winterswijk ) is a mammoth expert from the Netherlands .

Career

Dick Mol has been collecting fossils since 1968 . On his first visit to a museum in Leiden, his interest in mammoths was piqued when he saw the extensive collection of mammoth fossils there. Mol is referred to in the media as a paleontologist, researcher, or scientist despite working as a customs officer at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol . At customs he is a specialist in counterfeit branded products. In this role he was seen in the 1990s TV series "Schiphol Airport". In the field of paleontology , Mol is considered an expert on mammoths. His knowledge of these proboscis from the Ice Age ( Pleistocene ) earned him the nickname "Sir Mammoth". Its collection includes more than 20,000 mammoth fossils.

Dick Mol is a volunteer research fellow for fossil mammals at the Natural History Museum Rotterdam . He worked on numerous excavations in Europe, Asia (Siberia) and North America (Canada), in which mammoths and other animals from the Ice Age (about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) were recovered. He also collects finds of ice age animals that go into the net while fishing in the North Sea, which was temporarily the mainland (" North Sealand "), writes books with renowned researchers, gives lectures and is often seen on television. In 1999, Dick Mol joined the excavation of the Jarkow mammoth, led by Bernard Buigues . Since 2000 he has been a leading member and coordinator of the scientific team of CERPOLEX / Mammuthus (CERcles POLaires EXpedition), which is dedicated to researching the Pleistocene fossils of the Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia .

Honors

In 2002 Dick Mol received the Zittel Medal of the Paleontological Society for his services to palaeontology .
