The big stone is an erect boulder and possibly a prehistoric menhir near Piesdorf , a district of Könnern in the Salzlandkreis , Saxony-Anhalt .

Location and description

The stone is located about 240 m south of Piesdorf on the east side of the road leading to Gerbstedt . He stands directly on the border of two fields.

Despite its striking location and the long history of research on the menhirs in the Saale area , the stone is not mentioned in older publications. In the 1990s and 2000s it was only referred to as a boulder in geological articles. The soil monuments list published in 2016 by the state of Saxony-Anhalt lists it as a menhir, which may originally have crowned a burial mound that has now been leveled .

The stone consists of brown coal quartzite and is unprocessed. The northern long side is uneven and blistered. The stone has a height of 1.40 m, a width of 1.1 m and a thickness of 0.60 m. On the south side it has a small, 6 cm deep borehole, which was probably made for a planned but not carried out blast.
