Dictée de Mérimée
La Dictée de Mérimée is an orthographically demanding dictation with which the French writer Prosper Mérimée tested the spelling skills of the French Empress Eugénie de Montijo and her contemporaries in 1857 to pass the time . Emperor Napoleon III. Thereby made seventy-five mistakes, the Empress Eugenie sixty-two, Alexandre Dumas twenty-five. The Austrian envoy, Richard Klemens von Metternich , came off best with only three mistakes.
In terms of content, the text makes little sense, but it is still as famous today as it is notorious. It is a prime example of the difficulties of the French language and its orthography , which is considered to be complicated, rich in exceptions and difficult to learn because the difference between spoken and written French is very striking.
