The outliers - The way back is a docu-soap on RTL television . The first season consisted of five episodes that ran from January 23, 2008. In January and February 2009, the second season was seen, which included eight episodes. The third season began in January 2010. After a five-year break, the fourth season begins on March 23, 2015. This was canceled after two episodes due to insufficient audience numbers.

The concept

The series is dedicated to families whose children have run away from home and are now living as street children . The street worker and qualified social worker Thomas Sonnenburg tries with his 14 years of professional experience to solve family problems and to get the child to return. The first goal of Thomas Sonnenburg is to get the young people off the streets and offer them a new perspective on life. Sonnenburg is traveling all over Germany for the docu-soap.

Awards

The format was nominated on May 7, 2008 at the Rose d'Or International TV Festival in Lucerne in the “Reality” category.

On October 12, 2008, the series was awarded the German Television Prize in the Best Reality Show category.

criticism

The show was criticized by Panorama and Zapp , among others , because on the one hand it shows no real reference to the actual work of a street worker, because they do not have the options as they are presented in the show and on the other hand even partially through their media appearance the work hindered and / or negatively influenced by charities and helping organizations.

The main criticism from the professional public, however, related primarily to the publication of the names, places of residence and living conditions of the young protagonists. The exposure of the young people, who are normally protected by the Youth and Data Protection Act, should have been made possible, according to the parents concerned, by means of legally stipulated contracts between them and the production company. Objections of those affected were ignored with reference to these contracts and corresponding fines.

To this day there is speculation about why RTL had suddenly canceled the program. A new episode was broadcast on March 23rd and 30th, 2015.
