The Claymore saga ( Der Schicksalskampf des Keltenreichs ) by MB is the German version of the English board game Battle Masters , which was released in 1992. It is a fantasy - strategy game with over 100 miniatures (characters from Citadel Miniatures ), in collaboration with Games Workshop was developed.

The Claymore Saga is a game for 2 or more players, ages 10+, in which each player leads an army or assigned units of an army and tries to defeat his opponent in an open field battle.

Game setup

The miniatures are made of different colored plastic and must be partially assembled and placed on base plates before the first game. As a rule, several figures form a regiment on a base plate . The total of 25 regiments in the basic game are assigned to two armies: the Imperial Army and the Shadow Army. Each army consists of only available types of troops, such as imperial crossbowmen , halberd-bearers , artillerymen and knights on the imperial side and mythical creatures such as orcs , goblins , satyrs , giants and "dark" knights , as well as archers on the side of the shadow army .

The battle is fought on an approx. 2 m² play mat, which is divided into hexagonal fields. The printed area with paths and rivers is modified by means of palisades , hedges, fords , swamps and a defensive defense tower.

Course of the game

At the beginning of the battle, the armies usually face each other on opposite sides of the play mat. Here every general tries to take strategically favorable positions when building his army. However, certain starting positions can also be specified by the scenario. The aim of the battle is usually to eliminate the enemy army.

The turn order is not regularly alternating, but is determined by drawing action cards. These dictate which army can move and attack which regiment types. As a rule, each regiment listed may move one hexagon per action card. Fights are fought with the help of six-sided dice. Each regiment type is assigned a certain number of attack dice and a defense value (armor).

background

The background of the Claymore saga is the Warhammer universe of Games Workshop. All types of troops used can be found in the tabletop Warhammer Fantasy Battle : Orcs , Chaos Warriors , Beastmen , etc. In contrast to HeroQuest , another board game from the Warhammer universe, this connection has been completely removed from the German translation. The empire and its troops became the “Celtic Empire” and the “Imperial Army”, beastmen mutated into satyrs, goblins into gnomes , orcs into berserkers and chaos warriors into demons .

Extensions

There are two expansion boxes for the Claymore saga, which supply both sides with new troops: one is the Imperial Guard and the other is the Shadow Legion . These expansion boxes also introduce a points system with which individual armies can be put together instead of having to fall back on the basic armies.
