The Three Soldiers (Engl. "The Three Soldiers" also "The Three Servicemen") is a bronze statue on the National Mall in Washington, DC to commemorate the Vietnam War and supplement the 1982 Vietnam Veterans Memorial .
The group consists of three young US soldiers, armed and dressed as they were in the time of the Vietnam War. The statue is placed so that the soldiers look in the direction of the Memorial Wall with the names of the soldiers who died in Vietnam. The soldiers depicted are deliberately designed from different “races” , as white , African-American , and Latin American . It was one of the first depictions of an African American in a public sculpture. The group was designed to complement the minimalist design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by adding a more traditional component. The statue, unveiled on Veteran's Day, was designed in 1984 by Frederick Hart, who came third in the original tender.
