Image description

The upbringing of Jupiter by the virgin mountain nymph Adraste is one of the main works of the Flemish baroque painter Jacob Jordaens. The 219 × 247 cm painting was created around 1640. The daughters of Melisseus Adraste and Ide are obliged by Rhea to raise the young Jupiter in the Dictaean cave on Crete . The Jupiter boy cries in front of the cave because the goat Amalthea , with whose milk he is raised, has kicked the milk container and steps into it with her hind legs. Jordaens' mythological scene translates the ancient legend into believable life. On the left you can see the naked adraste next to a flock of sheep. She turns to the goat Amalthea, who is resisting milking. Sitting by a tree, Pan plays the flute to drown out the boy's screams, next to him Ide with another milk jar in hand. On the far right, the angry young Jupiter weeping for the misfortune.

Jordaens' painting focuses heavily on tonal values without any strikingly contrasting colors.
