The Gaza Monologues

The Gaza Monologue is the German title of a play and a radio play based on it based on texts by young people from the Gaza Strip ; they were created in 2010 after the Gaza War in December 2008 and January 2009. The original French title is Les Mono-Logues de Gaza , the English The Gaza-Monologues .

The play

The idea for the play came from Ashtar , a non-governmental organization that conducts acting training in Ramallah , East Jerusalem and Gaza and continues to develop the Palestinian theater . As the young people there are not allowed to leave the Gaza Strip, on October 17, 2010, Ashtar's initiative , the play was premiered simultaneously in over 40 theaters on all continents , including with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAD) and the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in the Berlin Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz . Here 18 young people from various Berlin youth theater clubs took on the roles: they only had two weeks to rehearse; the local production came from the theater director Lydia Ziemke and the theater pedagogue Uta Plate.

On November 29, 2010, the piece was performed again by representatives of the various groups at the meeting of the UN Committee for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in New York .

The German production was done by Deutschlandradio Kultur , the original broadcast on January 16, 2012, editing and direction by Katrin Moll, the editing was with Barbara Gerland.

In January 2012 it was chosen as radio play of the month by the German Academy of Performing Arts .
