The Hydronauts is a German - French cartoon series from 2003. It is based on the grass lion , a figure that children can identify with, which is supposed to bring them closer to the topic of environmental protection .

The alien Neptuna travels the oceans together with the seal Balty and the seagull Ponto. They learn a lot about the sea and how sensitive this ecosystem is.

The name hydronaut was based on the word astronaut, with the ancient Greek word astron (star) being replaced by the ancient Greek hydro for water.

Production and publication

The series was produced by Epidem, Millimages and Toons'n'Tales on behalf of Ki.Ka , NDR and France 5 until 2003 . It was directed by Udo Beissel and the music was composed by Nils Kacirek, Christian Mevs and Lars Löhn. The first broadcast took place from September 13th to December 6th, 2003 on Ki.Ka. It was later repeated on ARD and Hessischer Rundfunk . The series also aired in France and Finland.
