Beauty and the Beast is a musical by the German composer Martin Doepke . It was based on an idea by Andrea Friedrichs and Hans Holzbecher and celebrated its world premiere on September 22, 1994 in the Sartory Theater in Cologne . The book is by Christian Bienieck, and the lyrics were written by Elke Schlimbach and Grant Stevens.
An essential difference from the Disney version of the fairy tale , the first time in 1995 in Europe found its way to the musical stage, consists firstly in music and the other is that the story is not in France but in the midst of a small village in Germany is located . Some of the protagonists also have typical German names and not French ones. Musically, Doepke's score offers a mixture of ballads , up-tempo pieces and fast ensemble numbers .
