content

Chakuro lives in a community that travels through a sea of sand on a ship island called a mud whale. The community has had no contact with other people for a long time. It is divided into normal people and the "marked", those with "Saimia" (also Thymia ) - supernatural abilities. Most of the people on the Mud Whale are marked and, thanks to their abilities, also die much earlier than the unmarked. When they reach an island, an expedition is dispatched, which Chakuro also secretly joins. The girl Lykos is found on the island and, as the first stranger in a long time, is brought before the community's council of elders. But with Ouni, who wants to flee from the whale to escape death by Saimia, Lykos can flee. And Chakuro also accompanies them.

On the island, the three meet a nous, a living creature that spreads Saimia. Chakuro touches it and is overwhelmed by past life memories. All three of them pass out and can easily be captured again. Back on the Mud Whale, Lykos warns the community of an impending danger that threatens them all.

Characters

  • Chakuro (チ ャ ク ロ) : The protagonist of the story is Chakuro, a Mark who works as an archivist for the elders in the Mud Whale in the hope that his records will improve the lives of future generations. Curious and gentle, he sometimes dreams of seeing the world outside the muddy whale and immediately befriends Lykos after finding her on the deserted island.
  • Lykos (リ コ ス) : a mysterious girl who was found on an island that was supposed to be searched for resources by the people of the Mud Whale. “Lykos” isn't really her name, it's actually a term used to describe a mysterious creature that feeds on the emotions of anyone who gets close to it. Chakuro therefore calls her Lykos for convenience. At first she hesitates to speak to anyone, but with Chakuro's help she learns to express herself more openly.
  • Ouni (オ ウ ニ) : Another Tagged One who is said to have the greatest potential for thymia in the mud whale. He is the leader of the Moles, a group of young people who got their name because they often break the rules of the mud whale and thus spend a lot of time in the belly of the ship. Obsessed with abandoning the mud whale, Ouni has earned a reputation as a troublemaker. When Lykos is found by Chakuro, Ouni sees an opportunity to escape the mud whale. He later awakens an unknown force after seeing Nibi die.
  • Suoh (ス オ ウ) : An unmarked person who works as an assistant to the council of elders. He is Chakuro's friend and Sami's older brother, and he often gives them advice on how to help the mud whale people. He often crosses his hands, which, as Chakuro notes, suppresses his emotions.
  • Sami (サ ミ) : Chakuro's boyfriend and Suo's younger sister. She seems to have feelings for Chakuro and becomes easily jealous of Lykos when she sees how close she and Chakuro are. When a mysterious group of soldiers attacks the mud whale, they shield Chakuro from their bullets and die. She returns as a ghost, kisses and confesses her feelings to Chakuro before disappearing.
  • Taisha (タ イ シ ャ) : An unmarked woman and mayor of the Mud Whale.
  • Ryodari (リ ョ ダ リ) : An imperial soldier of the Allied Empire, who is characterized by his excessive feelings and shows sadistic features.
