The waves on Hong Hu Lake
The Waves on Hong Hu Lake ( Chinese 洪湖 水 浪 打 浪 , Pinyin Hóng Hú shuǐ làng dá làng ) is a Chinese red song . It is the theme music of the film " The Red Guards on Honghu Lake " from 1961, which in turn is an adaptation of a propaganda musical of the same name from 1958. Its protagonist leads the guerrilla troops against the warlord bandits.
The song reflects the zeitgeist of the revolutionary songs of the time. In 1962 it received the “Best Music” award from the first Hundred Flowers Awards .
Part of the song comes from a folk ballad, the "Xianghe Ballad", in which the suffering of the people under the floods is expressed. The composer Zhang Jing'an incorporated this into his piece "The Waves on Honghu Lake".
The Hong Hu -See in the province of Hubei to the north is the Dongjing River . Because there are often floods in the lake, it is called "Hong Hu" ("flood lake").
In the civil war between the Chinese communists and the Chinese national government, the red guards ( chiweidui ) differed from the partisans in that they were responsible for local defense, while the guerrillas were devoted to mobile warfare.
Quote
"This revolutionary song was written for a successful music and dance theater piece in 1959. It was made into a very popular film (Hong Hu Chi Wei Dui, d. Xie Tian, 1961) depicting how the Red Army in 1930 lead local people to fight against the Nationalist army. As with many of the revolutionary operas, the protagonist is a woman who leads the guerrilla forces against the warlord bandits. The song, opera, and film were favorites of the 1960s generation. "
