Diepold (Ortenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diepold († August 1285 ) the fourth and youngest son of Count Heinrich I von Ortenburg and Richgard von Hohenburg. Diepold came from the house of the Ortenburgers , a Lower Bavarian dynasty.

Live and act

Even at a young age, Diepold had to fear his stepbrother Heinrich II . He tried his whole life to get his stepbrothers Diepold, Gebhard and Rapoto IV under his control and to eliminate them. This situation was triggered by his father's marriage to Diepold's mother, which led to his falling out with his first son.

In 1238, Heinrich I gave Murach Castle and property to manage to his three sons from his second marriage . From then on they called themselves Counts of Ortenburg and Counts of Murach.

After the death of his stepbrother in 1257, the rest of the remaining county fell to his older brother Gebhard. In the course of time, the brothers jointly sold their properties in what is now Upper Palatinate. The reason may have been the great financial difficulties that the long flight brought with it, as well as the generous donations from his deceased stepbrother to the church, which wanted to prevent his brothers from accessing the property. In 1272 Diepold, Gebhard and Rapoto IV. Jointly sold the county of Murach to the Bavarian Duke Ludwig II. Thus, the Ortenburg county shrank to about the size of the Ortenburg market before the municipal reform of 1972.

Very little is known about Diepold's rest of life. He only appears as a witness to his brothers in documents. Since he can no longer be documented after 1285, it is assumed that he died around this time. His possessions fell to his brother Rapoto IV.

Today Diepoldstrasse in Oberviechtach is named after him.

progeny
