Dosing pumps (also dispensers ) are positive displacement pumps and deliver defined volumes per revolution, stroke or time regardless of the pressure conditions at the inlet and outlet of the dosing pump.

As metering pumps z. B. reciprocating piston pumps , peristaltic pumps , diaphragm pumps , gear pumps , or other positive displacement pumps (see also under pumping ).

In recent years, in particular, metering pumps based on the principle of eccentric screw pumps have been used very frequently . These achieve very high levels of accuracy and the dosing speed can also be controlled without additional measuring devices. An additional advantage is that variable dosing quantities can be set in a simple manner by changing the angle of the drive motor.

Dosing pumps are u. a. Used for applying adhesives , for dosing drugs ( infusions ) or chemicals in chemical processes , culture media in biotechnical processes as well as in vehicles (e.g. as an injection pump ).

Dosing pumps in the laboratory and in industry

A large number of different metering pumps are used for chemistry , biotechnology , food and the environment , both in laboratories and in industry. The delivery rate can often be set both manually and via a data interface .

When selecting a suitable metering pump, the following parameters may have to be taken into account:

  • Dosing range
  • Pressure-stable characteristic
  • Bidirectional funding
  • Media compatibility
  • Gentle pumping of shear-sensitive media
  • Solid fractions, abrasive components
  • viscosity
  • Self priming
  • Conveying in and out of the vacuum
  • Dead space free
  • Locking off
  • Safe to run dry
  • Autoclavable
  • decontamination
  • Easy to maintain
  • Data interface

Additive metering pump

In fuel injection systems, metering pumps are used to deliver the fuel, usually gasoline or diesel oil, with the necessary pressure into the combustion chamber or intake tract . One example is the injection pumps in diesel engines .

Metering pumps are also used in motor vehicles to add additives to the fuel , if this cannot be done while refueling, as well as for metering fuel for external heaters (auxiliary / auxiliary heaters ).
