Dieter Backhaus

Dieter Backhaus (born March 31, 1937 ) is a former German soccer player who, as a striker for VfL Bochum, played 73 games in the West Soccer League from 1957 to 1961 and scored 20 goals.

career

From the offspring of MBV Bochum emerged -Linden took Backhaus in 1955 with the German youth national team at UEFA youth tournament in Italy in part. The left and right winger was used in the two group games against Portugal (0: 0) as right winger and against Italy (0: 1) as left winger. At the age of 20 he joined VfL Bochum in the West Football League. Under VfL coach Herbert Widmayer , the winger made his debut on August 11, 1957 at the home game against Meidericher SV on the side of teammates Siegfried Tiedtke (goalkeeper), Heinz Lowin , Theodor Bergmeier , Gerd Hohmann and Gerd Schirrmacher on the left wing in the Oberliga. On September 4th he was nominated by national coach Sepp Herberger for a viewing game that brought together an A against a B selection in Hanover. In the B selection, he stormed left winger and center forward Rudolf Kölbl scored two goals for the B-Elf, which lost 3: 5 goals. In the major league, however, he experienced a relegation battle with the team from Castroper Strasse that lasted until the last lap day. On matchday 30 - April 13, 1958 - the 1-1 home draw against Viktoria Köln was enough for VfL to keep the class, as Wuppertaler SV lost 2-0 at the same time as runner-up 1. FC Köln and thus with one Point deficit in the 2nd division had to be relegated. The newcomer from Linden had scored three goals in 19 missions. Backhaus played his personal best round in 1959/60 when he scored twelve goals in 27 league games for VfL and thus clearly topped the club's internal goalscorer list. Outstanding games for the versatile offensive player were his three goals in December 1959 in the 3-1 home win against Hamborn 07, the two goals for the 2-1 away win on April 3, 1960 at Rot-Weiss Essen and his winning goal in the 66. Minute of play on April 24 for the 3-2 home win in front of 25,000 spectators against the West Champion 1. FC Köln, which allowed Bochum to save themselves from relegation with one point ahead of Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Backhaus was not forgotten by Sepp Herberger. In May 1959, he brought Bochum into two international matches for the U23 junior national team. On May 10, the game against England took place in Bochum, it ended in a 2-2 draw and the German attack had presented itself in the formation with Ernst Kuster , Günter Herrmann , Rudolf Kölbl , Heinz Höher and Backhaus. Backhaus scored both goals for the DFB selection. Ten days later he was also on the list of goalscorers in a 4-2 win against Poland in Krakow. His third and final appointment to the DFB junior team was the international match against Hungary on November 7, 1959 in Miskolc. The game ended 2-2 and the Nuremberg center forward Heinz Strehl scored both goals. In 1959 the DFB carried out three international junior games in which Backhaus stormed for Germany.

In his fourth league round, 1960/61, the rescue did not work at the last second. On the final day, VfL lost their home game with 1: 4 goals against Hamborn 07 and were relegated from the Oberliga West together with RW Essen. Backhaus scored a goal in 14 games under coach Fritz Silken . He played for Bochum in the 1961/62 season in the 2nd League West and then ended his higher-class career at the age of 25.
