Dieter Eichler

Dieter Eichler (born February 18, 1954 ) was a soccer player in the GDR . For 1. FC Union Berlin he played a short time in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR football association .

Athletic career

Eichler began his football career in 1962 in the sports community of Niederlehme , southeast of Berlin. At the age of 15, he moved to the youth department of 1. FC Union Berlin in 1969, where he played first in the youth team and a year later in the youth team. Already at the age of 18 Eichler was used in the first division team of 1. FC Union. He played his first league game on October 21, 1972 in the encounter on the 6th match day of the 1972/73 season Union Berlin - Sachsenring Zwickau (1-0). He came on in the 32nd minute for the injured midfielder Wolfgang Juhrsch . Then Eichler came in as a substitute in another five league games during the season. At the end of the season, Union was relegated to the GDR league , where it remained until 1976. Eichler played for the Berlin club until 1975 and had his best season in 1974/75 when he played 19 of the 22 GDR league games. He then played three more games for Union in the promotion round to the league, but suffered a traffic accident after the game Union Berlin - Chemie Leipzig (1: 1) that took place on May 17, 1975, the consequences of which ended his career as a football player. From 1972 to 1975 he played 48 competitive games for 1. FC Union Berlin, in which he scored nine goals. In addition to his six league games without scoring, he played 37 times in the second-rate GDR league with eight goals and in five games for the GDR soccer cup , in which he scored one goal.
