Dieter Gerschler

Dieter Gerschler (born November 28, 1944 in Chemnitz ) is a German artist (concept, sculpture, installation, performance, photography).

Life

Gerschler was taken in by his grandparents and an aunt as legal guardians. The father was French, but of unknown origin. After graduating from high school in 1963, he trained as a painter and upholsterer, then in 1967, after serving in the NVA, he began his studies at the “Technical School for Applied Arts” in Heiligendamm . He finished this in 1970 with a graduate design degree in color and shape design. He then worked in Karl-Marx-Stadt . 1974 Gerschler was politically imprisoned in Cottbus , in mid-1975, through a ransom by the FRG, he moved to Hamburg, where he studied from 1976 to 1980 at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (today HAW Faculty for Design, Media and Information), with a degree in design (media communication and graphic design). From 1980 to 1983 he then studied at the "Hochschule für Bildende Künste" in Hamburg with Prof. Franz Erhard Walther. This was also the beginning of his independent artwork on long-term projects. He created the basis for this by starting his own business. Until 2009 he worked in his advertising agency in the fields of advertising and PR. He says of himself: "I live in the rhythm of standing and free legs, alternating between job and calling". Gerschler lives in his studio and garden in Hamburg-Hohenfelde.

Gerschler's first public appearance was a performance in Vienna in the Museum of the 20th Century in 1978 . Right from the start, he was interested in the representation culture in museums and galleries, in the representation of project and process-based actions. The poles between art and non-art space are synonymous for him. He also showed this in 1983 in his first exhibition in Hamburg, entitled The Johann Wolfgang von Köter Museum shows installed spaces - the ivory tower , in which Gerschler turned his studio, greenhouse and garden into a temporary public space that simulated the functioning of the museum.

The pseudonym Köter stands for his mixed nationality. For the first time so-called flags could be seen, in this case human-sized pages of paper. They were the first results of a year-long work of art in which Gerschler worked with the material blood . The basis of his conceptual approach was the Lutheran New Testament , which he copied page by page. The result of copying as an art process is the flow of artistic transformation into the constant present.

So Gerschler created his main work of art in his ivory tower : NT-THE GERSCHLER BIBLE / INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLYING . He ended the work process after 24 years on November 28, 2004 with a brand signature dedication of the work bound in leather. The NT diary project ended digitally in 2013.

Between 1999 and 2002, when he lived without a studio with his partner and daughter in early childhood in St. Pauli, he made a virtue out of his studio trouble. Pasta letters, a popular side dish for the daughter, showed Gerschler the artistic way out of the confined space: From now on, the little ABC of pasta lived not only in the soup, but also in his art. The results could be seen in the then popular Galerie 88 , where he lived diagonally across the street. The exhibition was called: at times tender to the tongue - what for the eye, what for the belly .

After completing the group exhibition Old People and Young Art in the Holstenhof senior citizens' facility (Hamburg-Jenfeld) in 1997, Gerschler was commissioned in 2000 with the artistic design of a farewell room. This was preceded by the fact that he had already dealt with the topic of death culture. The handover and consecration took place in the same year. In 2002, a second room of silence was given and consecrated.

The so-called man-made age , which was determined by the term Anthropocene at the beginning of the new millennium, in 2002 , was already a field that had to be worked on continuously for him. Gerschler formulated his postulate in the development of his earth world formula and presented the formula for the first time in 2013.

Gerschler's statement as a feminist appears as a further complex of topics that manifests itself in interdisciplinary work. Photography has its own place in this.

reception

The 366-page NT DIE GERSCHLER BIBEL diary project is to be recorded as a book and as a sculpture. Various formats for approaching and immersing yourself in the work are available for this. The material that Gerschler makes available to the recipient as a space for action and thinking in his work process in the form of the three text module boxes can build meaning, regardless of the educational history of the viewer. With its intercultural references, regardless of national or religious background, NT-DIE GERSCHLER BIBLE can be read in all languages, including the millions of illiterate people. By integrating the recipient in participatory action, Gerschler opens up ways to approach the work of art. This attitude is also evident in other works in his work.
