Dieter Kaegi (* 1957 in Zurich ) is a Swiss opera director.

biography

Kaegi was born in Zurich in 1957, where he completed his primary and secondary education. In the 1970s he studied musicology and German in Zurich and Paris. Since the 1990s, Kaegi has staged a total of over 100 opera performances worldwide.

In 1980, Dieter Kaegi became assistant director at the Zurich Opera House under Claus Helmut Drese , who had been director of the Opera House since 1975. In 1982 he became assistant to the French opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle . During his time at Ponnelle he worked on opera productions for stage and film. Television productions included L'italiana in Algeri (1986), two episodes from "Live from the Metropolitan Opera" Idomeneo (1983) and Le nozze di Figaro (1985), Cardillac (1985) and Tristan and Isolde (1983).

From 1986, Kaegi moved to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as an assistant , before moving to the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1989 as production manager and personal assistant to general director John Mordler . From 1990 to 1998 he directed productions at the Festival d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence .

In 1998 he was appointed Artistic Director of Opera Ireland in Dublin. In 2010 he co-founded the Lismore Music Festival, the name of which was changed to Blackwater Valley Opera Festival in 2018 . Kaegi remains the Artistic Director of the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival.

In 2012 Dieter Kaegi took on the role of opera manager of the Biel Solothurn Theater Orchestra (TOBS) in Switzerland.

On April 1, 2020, he took over the presidency of the Swiss Stage Association from Stephan Märki .

Honors

In 2008, Kaegi was awarded the Cavalière Order by the Italian government for his services to the arts and opera.
