Refiloe Johannes Mudimu (born March 6, 1954 in Sophiatown , Johannesburg ) is a retired South African anti-apartheid fighter and Vice Admiral . From 2005 to 2014 he was the first black man in the rank of admiral to head the South African Navy .

Life

At about 21 years of age, Mudimu became a member of the ANC and the MK . In 1976 he was one of the student leaders in the nationwide unrest at the time of the Soweto uprising . On August 14, 1976, like many others, he went into exile after the bloody suppression of the student protests and left South Africa for a long time.

First Mudimu underwent military training in Angola , then in the GDR and finally in the USSR . Here he successfully completed his command training in 1977. Back in Angola, he worked as an instructor in MK camps until 1979. His mission was successful and so Mudimu took over the position of Chief of Logistics based in Luanda in Angola . Mudimu later went to the ANC headquarters in Lusaka , Zambia . Here he was employed as coordinator of the Youth Radio Program and in the editorial team for youth publications.

In early 1985, the ANC sent him to Harare , Zimbabwe , where Mudimu was responsible for organizing supplies to the MK. Eventually he took over the leadership of militant underground units in the Transvaal and in the north of the province. His experience in leading people led him to the role of Deputy Chief of Personnel and Training in 1992 with a seat in the MK High Command. In this role he took part in the integration of military resistance structures into the country's new armed forces ( SANDF ), which has been active since 1994 . After this period, the chief of staff, General Siphiwe Nyanda , appointed him to his team. Later, as Director Integration of the Non Statutory Forces ( NSF’s ) , Mudimu dealt with the integration of special former combat units.

On January 12, 1998 he was transferred to the South African Navy with promotion to Rear Admiral (JG, Junior Grade, about: Flotilla Admiral ), where he became Inspector General of the Navy after a certain time. During this time he successfully completed the Navy Senior Command and Staff Course and the Senior Management Program at Stellenbosch University .

On April 1, 1999, Mudimu was transferred to Simon's Town , where he was Chief of Fleet Staff until September 30, 2000 . With October 1, 2000 he achieved the rank of Rear Admiral and took over the post of Chief Director Maritime Support , which was later referred to as Chief of Naval Staff . He has successfully completed all training courses for military executives since 1994, most recently the Joint Staff Course as Vice Admiral .

On March 1, 2005, the High Command took his promotion to Vice Admiral and appointed him Chief of the South African Navy . He succeeded the previous incumbent Johan Retief .

Mudimu earned degrees and others; a Masters in Military Science and an Honors Degree in Public Management and Governance . He also obtained an Associate Degree in Safety and Security , a Diploma in Human Resource Management and a Diploma in Personnel and Training , a Certificate in Journalism and other management qualifications.

With effect from March 31, 2014, he resigned from the High Command of the South African Navy . His successor in office was his previous deputy R ear Admiral Samuel Hlongwane .

On March 20, 2014, he took up the position of chairman at the state armaments company Armscor , which he held actively until October 2018 and was unable to continue for health reasons. In this position he was succeeded by the previous South African ambassador to France, Thuthukile Skweyiya .
