history
The two city theaters were merged to form the federal city theater in 1927. After a crisis, the ensemble was dissolved in 1971, but operations were resumed a year later under the director Alex Freihart. In 1995, the communities of Biel and Solothurn, together with the Biel Orchestra Society - today the Biel Solothurn Symphony Orchestra - founded the New City Theater Foundation , from which the Biel Solothurn Theater emerged. In 2011, the New City Theater Foundation was dissolved in order to unite theater and orchestra under the umbrella of a new Biel Solothurn Theater and Orchestra Foundation (TOBS) .
The Biel Solothurn Theater Orchestra today consists of the musical theater , concert , drama and dance branches . There are also various offers in the field of children's and youth theater . The same pieces are played in the city theaters of both cities, with the music theater producing five productions per season in Biel / Bienne and bringing them to the première, while the seven drama productions are rehearsed in Solothurn. The ensemble also plays in numerous guest houses in Switzerland (e.g. Theater Winterthur , Stadttheater Schaffhausen , Kurtheater Baden , Stadttheater Langenthal ) and in France.
During the 2013/2014 season, the Solothurn City Theater, the oldest baroque theater in Switzerland, had to undergo major renovations. With the addition of the neighboring house "Krieg", additional space could be created in the spectator area, and the decorative paintings by Felix Josef Wirz from the 18th century were exposed in the auditorium and restored by the Solothurn Monument Preservation. During the renovation, the Solothurn performances were shown in various alternative venues across the city. On November 28, 2014, after 17 months of construction, the city handed over the newly renovated city theater to Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn .
