history

Auditorium of the Schaffhausen City Theater

In the 19th century, the Schaffhausen merchant Johann Conrad Im Thurn achieved great wealth with his London trading house. Always connected to his hometown, he donated 10,000 pounds sterling in 1864, with which the first Schaffhausen city theater was built on Herrenacker. It was named after him.

The Imthurneum , built in the courtyard by the architect Georg Friedrich Peyer, housed the music school and a concert and theater hall on a total area of 9 × 27 meters. It was inaugurated on January 16, 1867 with Schiller's Maiden of Orleans and in a short time it became the cultural center of the city. The auditorium was covered by a large dome, had intimate acoustics and, because of its 117 doors, was the reason for the nickname Draft Theater . Johann Conrad Im Thurn was made an honorary citizen of Schaffhausen.

Between 1916 and 1938, the Schaffhausen City Theater had its own ensemble, which first played in Winterthur and later also in Constance . Around 1938 the city took over the building from the foundation. The music school left the building, where now only the concerts of the music college and the theater performances supervised by the city council took place.

The building, already a bit shabby when it was taken over by the city, had to be closed in 1952 after pieces of stucco fell into the empty auditorium during a rehearsal. Until the opening of the new building, the performances took place in the hall of the Schaffhauser Hof inn or in the casino. On October 13, 1956, the new city theater designed by the architect Paul Meyer was inaugurated.

Another of these subscriptions offers four performances by the Färbe Ensemble in German singing . Events as part of the Schaffhausen International Bach Festival also take place here.
