Dieter Klaus (born July 8, 1938 in Cologne ; † April 16, 2010 ) was a German geographer , climatologist and systems scientist.

Career

Klaus studied geography and mathematics in Munich and Bonn. In 1972 he obtained his doctorate in Bonn with Wilhelm Lauer , and in 1979 he completed his habilitation. From 1977 Klaus taught as a professor at the Geography Institute at the University of Bonn . The main research areas were climate change, local climate models, desertification processes, Mexico, Tunisia, the Sahel and systems research.

Klaus was a pioneer of earth system science , of mathematical-statistical analyzes and system modeling, in particular of global environmental and climate changes. His system-analysis studies of ecological processes, local climate analyzes and the development of procedures for calculating global carrying capacity were groundbreaking.
