Dieter Metzler

Dieter Metzler (born May 18, 1939 in Münster ) is a German ancient historian and classical archaeologist .

Metzler studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Greek in Münster , Munich , Berlin and Paris. In 1966 he received his doctorate from Max Wegner in Münster. From 1967 to 1970 he worked at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe and at the University of Cologne . Since 1971 he has been assistant to Ruth Altheim-Stiehl at the Department of Ancient History at the University of Münster . In 1977 he received his habilitation there for ancient history . In 1977 he became professor for "Ancient History and Didactics of History" at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe, Münster department. After joining the University of Münster in 1980, he taught there until his retirement in 2004 in teacher training, particularly for elementary schools .

His main research interests include the cultural contacts of the ancient Mediterranean world with distant Asia, the history of ancient Iran, the ancient religious history and the afterlife of ancient times.
