Dieter Paul (* 1938 ) is a German chemist.

Career

After studying at the TH Leuna-Merseburg and obtaining his doctorate , he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig in 1973. From 1963 to 1991 he worked at the Institute for Polymer Chemistry Teltow-Seehof of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (investigation of the formation of viscose fibers), between 1979 –1983 at the Instituto Quimia y Biologia Experimental in La Habana (development of textile fibers from sugar cane bagasse). Afterwards he was involved in the GDR development of the artificial kidney based on hollow membranes.

In 1990 he was appointed professor at the academy as one of the last scientists in the GDR. In 1990/1991 he was Deputy Director of the Institute for Polymer Chemistry in Teltow.

From 1994 to 2002 Dieter Paul was director of the Institute for Chemistry at the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht with locations in Geesthacht and Teltow as well as an adjunct professor at the University of Hamburg .

His fields of work were the development of membranes for technical applications of liquid and gas separation and in medicine as biomaterial.

Dieter Paul is the owner of several patents. He published over 200 scientific papers and in 2003 together with B. Philipp the book 80 Years of Polymer Research in Teltow-Seehof - 20 Years of the Institute for Chemistry at GKSS. (2003, ISBN 3-00-011356-8 )

In 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
