Dieter Zimmer (politician)

Dieter Zimmer (born October 12, 1958 in Offenthal ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was Mayor of Dreieich from January 2007 to February 2019 .

education and profession

Zimmer grew up in Offenthal and attended elementary school there from 1964 to 1968 . He then attended the Ludwig-Erk-Schule in Dreieichenhain from 1968 to 1974 , where he received his secondary school leaving certificate and then went to the Ricarda-Huch-Schule in Sprendlingen , where he graduated from high school in 1978 .

Zimmer began his career in the upper administrative service of the city of Dreieich and held various functions there, including becoming a clerk in the personnel office in 1982, head of department for payroll accounting in the personnel office in 1983 and, after his transfer to the social welfare office in 1985, head of various departments there. In 1991 he was appointed deputy head of the social welfare office.

Political career

In August 2001 Zimmer, who has been a member of the SPD since February 12, 1989 and has been a member of the board of the SPD local association Offenthal since 1990, was elected to the First City Council of Dreieich and held this office until 2006. As the first city councilor, he also took over the post of social affairs officer .

On September 17, 2006, Zimmer was elected mayor of Dreieich with 67.1% of the vote. His inauguration took place on January 16, 2007. His grandfather Georg Zimmer was already politically active in the SPD and was Mayor of Offenthal from 1945 to 1960. On September 16, 2012, Dieter Zimmer was re-elected as mayor with 70.7% of the vote. He prevailed against five opposing candidates. In the 2018 mayoral election, he decided not to run again for health reasons.

Zimmer has been a member of the district council since March 2001 .
