Dietmar Huebner (born April 16, 1968 in Solingen ) is a German philosopher, author and composer.

Life

Hübner initially studied physics as a major at the Universities of Bonn (Diploma 1995) and Cambridge (M. Phil. 1995). He then continued his studies with a focus on philosophy at the University of Bonn (Prom. 1999, Habil. 2007). His academic teachers were mainly Hans Michael Baumgartner and Ludger Honnefelder . Hübner has been Professor of Practical Philosophy , in particular Ethics of Science, at Leibniz University Hannover since 2010 .

philosophy

Hübner's philosophical focus is on general ethics , applied ethics and political philosophy . More recently, he has also dealt with metaphysical questions , namely with the problem of human free will .

Hübner's way of working is often characterized by an "integrative" approach, which unites different positions in an overarching design and seeks to place seemingly irreconcilable approaches to problems in a deeper argumentative context. His endeavor to trace hidden references and analogies between the approaches and terms discussed is often reflected in a "symmetrizing" writing style, which also seeks to meticulously accentuate the corresponding parallels on a linguistic level.

In Die Bilder der Gerechtigkeit (Paderborn 2009), Hübner argues that opposing views of the just distribution of goods can be traced back to differing interpretations of the principle of “impartiality”. More precisely, according to Hübner, the relevant statements in this sector are based on specific metaphorics (“images”) of impartiality, namely “distance” ( utilitarianism ), “undressing” ( egalitarianism ) or “concealment” ( contractualism ). Only in their entirety do these open up a comprehensive understanding of fair distributions. In particular, only their reference structure shows which systematic relationships exist between common distribution criteria (equality, freedom, total maximization, minimum supply, etc.)

In decision and History (Freiburg / Munich 2001) Hübner formulated a fundamental criticism of the decision-theoretical school of "classical utility theory". In contrast to this, he advocates an open combination of different decision criteria that can serve as orientation points for rational behavior under risk or uncertainty. Huebner then draws on the structural elements of human action revealed in this process as an interpretative foil for various currents within the modern philosophy of history. More precisely, they should serve to reconstruct essential starting points of various narrative theoretical concepts of history.

Hübner is the author of an ethics textbook ( Introduction to Philosophical Ethics , 2014) and a short guide to writing academic texts ( Ten Commandments for Philosophical Writing , 2012/2013). Huebner u. a. known for his lectures on practical philosophy and political philosophy, which have appeared on YouTube .
