Dietmar Herz (cultural scientist)

Dietmar Herz (born January 7, 1938 in Senftenberg , Niederlausitz) is a German cultural scientist and former officer in the People's Navy of the GDR . He lives in Dranske on the island of Rügen .

Training, army and scientific activity

Dietmar Herz was born in Senftenberg in 1938 as the eldest of three sons. He graduated from elementary and high school with a high school diploma in 1956. In the same year began his career as a professional officer in the naval forces, from 1960 Volksmarine, the GDR. After completing the officers' school (4 years) in Stralsund, he worked as a commander on a clearing boat (1st flotilla) and torpedo speedboats (6th flotilla) until 1965. Herz attended a training course for political officers in Naumburg (2 years), then worked as such in the political department of the 6th Flotilla on the newly created post “Head of the NVA House”. From 1970 to 1991 he was head of the NVA house in Dranske. During this time he qualified as a state-certified director of cultural institutions at the college for cultural house directors and from 1977 to 1982 in distance learning at the Humboldt University of Berlin as a diploma in cultural studies. In 1988 he was discharged from active military service with the rank of frigate captain and continued to work as a civilian worker until the house was closed in 1991. He received many awards and honors for his work. Until his retirement in 2002, Herz still worked as a freelance sales representative and manager of a holiday property in the Dranske area. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Heimatverein Dranske eV and since 2007 a member of the Marinekameradschaft Bug 1992 eV

Today he is retired and active in the Heimatverein Dranske e. V. active.

Activity as local historian

With his membership in the Heimatverein Dranske eV he began to write the Ortschronik von Dranske, which appeared in the series of the association "Heimat Dranske" in several issues. Since 2004 he has been the second chairman of the association.
