Dietrich Horn (pedagogue)

Gerhard Dietrich Horn (born February 7, 1838 in Ringenberg near Wesel, † February 24, 1906 in Elberfeld ) was a German educator.

Life

Gerhard Dietrich Horn was the son of an old farming family; his father died early. At the age of 15 he became a teaching assistant in Issum, then in Repelen. In the Schürmann seminar in Repelen, he began training as a teacher, which he completed in Wuppertal. He then worked as a teacher in Pohlhausen, in 1863 in Bommern and from 1865 to 1870 in Barmen. In 1870 Horn became rector of the municipal elementary schools in Witten. Until his retirement in 1905, Horn headed the Protestant Preparatory Institute , a preparatory seminar for teachers, in Orsoy from 1873 to 1905 .

On the facade of the preparatory shop at Fährstrasse 16 in Orsoy there is a plaque commemorating Dietrich Horn's honorary citizenship in 1905 . In addition, a bust above the door of the former teachers' college honors the director Dietrich Horn.

In Orsoy he was the first alderman of the city for many years and temporarily represented the mayor's office. Horn founded and managed a savings and loan fund on a voluntary basis. He was also involved in the agricultural association and various educational associations. In Orsoy he founded an educational association, of which he was chairman. In 1905 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Orsoy.

Dietrich Horn was married to Helene geb. Rueping; one son was the theologian Friedrich "Fritz" Horn .
