history

Dilsen, presumably founded by the Romans as Feresne, was given under administration to Baron Michel van Rosen of the Prince Diocese of Liège in 1723 . He then had the castle, which still exists today, built in 1725. After the Maas finally formed a new river bed and from then on no longer flowed directly past Dilsen, the previous fishing village began to develop in an agricultural way. A tower from 1541, which belonged to the church that was demolished in 1928, still stands in the center of the village today. Today the N78 expressway runs through the village and connects Maaseik with Tongeren , the oldest city in Belgium .
