Dimitris Tziovas

Dimitris Tziovas ( Greek Δημήτρης Τζιόβας , born February 27, 1957 ) is a Greek Neo- Greekist .

Tziovas studied philology at the University of Ioannina with a diploma (πτυ )ο), which was followed by a doctoral scholarship at the University of Birmingham , which he completed with a PhD . Today he is Professor of Modern Greek Studies at the Center for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham, of which he was director from 2000 to 2003. From 1995 to 1998 he was secretary of the European Society for Neo- Greek Studies and a member of the scientific advisory board of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (1995–2009, from 1995–2005 also editor of the review section) and the American Journal of Modern Greek Studies (1992– 2007).

Tziovas works on the literature, culture and history of modern Greece . The focus is on the literary theoretical investigation of fictional literature, the Greek language question , the Greek diaspora , Greek politics and the question of national identity, intercultural relations in the Balkans , the reception of Greek antiquity and Byzantine history, literature and culture in the modern Greek literature and culture. He has organized four international conferences on various of these topics at the University of Birmingham ( Greek Modernism and Beyond , 1995; Greece and the Balkans , 2001; Greek Diaspora and Migration , 2007; Reimagining the Past: Greek Antiquity and Modern Greek Culture , 2011). Last but not least, he is editor of the Birmingham Modern Greek Translations , a series of publications for translations from Modern Greek into English.
