life and work

Mohan earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering after attending Doon School (Rajiv Gandhi's lot) at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) . After earning a master's degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Delaware in the United States, he received a PhD in bioengineering from the University of Michigan . He began his research career at the Institute of Biomechanics at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute at Ann Arbor , where he specialized in biomechanics . He then worked with Institute President William Haddon at the Institute of Highway Safety in Washington, DC . They conducted investigations into head injuries from free falls and baseball bats, among other things. There he directed and published the first real assessment of the airbag effectiveness in frontal crashes of General Motors vehicles. His work there also had an impact on the development of regulations that require children to be secured in the back seat. In 1979 he went back to India to work at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. There he was chairman of the chair for biomechanics and rehabilitation from 1981 to 1991. From 1991 to 2010 he was head of the Center for Research and Training in Security Technology at IIT Delhi. From 1991 to 1996 he was director of the Center for Biomedical Engineering and from 1998 to 2010 he coordinated the program for traffic research and injury prevention. From 2010 to 2015 he was at the Volvo Chair for Transportation Planning & Safety at the IITD. He was then Professor at Shiv Nadar University until 2018 and since 2017 he has been Honorary Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
