Career

As a player

Stecher started his career at the age of nine at EHC Olten . After Heinz Grieder moved to Zürcher SC , Stecher made his debut for Olten in the National League B at the age of 19 in the 1984/85 season . This season, he played a crucial role in the rise of Olten in the National League A . Before the 1987/88 season he moved to Friborg-Gottéron , where he stayed for seven seasons before moving to Zürcher SC after the final defeat against EHC Kloten . In the spring of 1996 he actually wanted to end his career there and in the meantime became goalkeeping coach for the Zurich team, but jumped in a few months after an injury to keeper Thomas Papp . An injury ended Stecher's time at Zurich in December 1997. After a phase as a goalkeeper coach with the SC Bern juniors , he returned to the ice for two months in 1999 and only missed promotion to the National League A with the B division team EHC Chur scarce.

As a trainer

Stecher began his coaching career during his active time. From 1996 to 1997 he was an assistant coach at Zürcher SC. He then worked as a goalkeeper coach at the SC Bern juniors (1998 to 1999) and as a junior coach at EHC Olten (2000 to 2002). In 2002 he became head coach at EHC Arosa (1st division). Two years later he moved to EHC Olten in the National League B, where he worked as head coach for four years. In 2009 he became head coach of the elite juniors at EHC Biel . From 2010 to 2011 he was head coach at the GCK Lions in the National League B. From 2011 to 2013 he worked as an assistant coach at the EHC alongside head coach Kevin Schläpfer . 2013 he took over as coach at the EHC Basel Sharks in the National League B . After the bankruptcy of EHC Basel Sharks in July 2014, Stecher moved to EHC Olten as an assistant coach. At the beginning of the 2016/2017 season, he was employed again as an assistant coach at EHC Biel. After head coach Kevin Schläpfer was dismissed, Stecher resigned voluntarily and left the club for good at the end of January to act as project manager for the sports center in Huttwil .
