The Dinomyidae ("terrible mice"), which include about 50 fossil species in addition to the Pakarana, which is still alive today , are a South American family of rodents from whose ranks the largest representatives of this order emerged. The recently discovered remains of the Pliocene species Josephoartigasia monesi suggest an animal weighing around a ton. Another extinct family of giant rodents from South America were the Neoepiblemidae , which are known to have about ten fossil species.

The Dinomyidae have been known from South America since the Oligocene . In addition to Josephoartigasia monesi , Phoberomys pattersoni and Telicomys giganteus are among the largest rodents that have ever lived.
