The church Dio Padre Misericordioso ( Italian for: God, the Merciful Father , Latin : Dei Patris misericordis , also called Chiesa del Giubileo ) is a modern church in the Roman district of Tor Tre Teste (between Via Casilina and Via Prenestina) and was built according to the plans of the American architect Richard Meier and inaugurated in 2003.

Building

Dio Padre Misericordioso was created as part of a building program for the Diocese of Rome , which wanted to build churches of high architectural quality on the outskirts of the city for the anniversary year 2000. After the diocese was dissatisfied with the results of a first open competition, six star architects were specifically invited for the second competition: Tadao Ando , Günter Behnisch , Santiago Calatrava , Peter Eisenman , Frank O. Gehry and Richard Meier . In May 1996, the jury decided on Meier's design.

The Church is the titular deaconry of Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe .

The church building, which is 40 m long and 31 m wide, is rather small and represents a strongly stylized ship with three sails. The sails have a height of 17, 22 and 27 m. The church tower is 20 m high. With recourse to the Christian symbolic language, the ship stands for the universal church as the people of God who sails through the “sea” of the third millennium. The three slightly concave bowls ("sails") also stand for the Trinity , whereby the innermost and largest, which vaults the worship area, can also be seen as a symbol of God's protection for the Christian community. The outermost bowl arches over the baptismal chapel, the middle one over the sacrament chapel.

In order to protect the white of the outer walls from heavy air pollution, a new type of self-cleaning concrete coated with titanium dioxide was used. As a surprising side effect, it was found that the titanium dioxide pigments also bind air pollutants and bring about a measurable improvement in air quality in the immediate vicinity of the church building. "Bright natural light floods into the interior of white concrete and transparent glass from all sides - characteristic of Meier's architecture, for whom light is considered to be 'the most popular and diverse building material' ('the most important thing is light. Light is life'). The incidence of light that changes over the course of the day causes reflections on the white walls. The white color, which is also typical for Meier's architecture, seems to almost potentiate the incident light and harmonizes the space to a unity of almost spiritual quality, which is comparable to the refined light showings of southern German Rococo churches. "

organ

The organ was built in 2003 by the organ building company Organaria Romana. The instrument consists of a three-manual electronic organ and also has 9 sounding pipe registers on two manuals.
