Dion Martinez
Dion M. Martinez (born June 26, 1837 - March 11, 1928 ) was a Cuban-American chess master .
He was considered one of the strongest chess players in Philadelphia. There he played a few games against James Mason (4: 5 1874 and 3: 1 1875), Wilhelm Steinitz (0: 7 in November 1882, 2.5: 4.5 in December 1882 and 1:10 1883) and Johannes Zukertort ( 3.5: 9.5 1884).
He was split 17th-18th in New York 1889 (Sixth American CC, Miksa Weiss and Michail Iwanowitsch Tschigorin won). A portrait of him (along with other participants in the tournament) was published on page 8 of the New York Times on June 16, 1889, under the title The Chessboard Kings .
