Diplectrum ( Syn .: Haliperca ) is a genus of the sawfish (Serranidae). The fish live near the coast in the tropical and subtropical eastern and central Pacific and with two species also in the tropical western Atlantic.

features

Diplectrum species reach lengths of 17 to 37 cm. They are slender with spindle-shaped, only slightly laterally flattened bodies. The dorsal and ventral body profile are approximately the same. The caudal fin is indented or slightly forked, with the upper lobe often being slightly larger and in some cases ending with a long filament. The dorsal fin is only slightly indented between the hard and soft radiating section. The scales are comb scales . The snout and the top of the head are bare. Both the jaws and the palate are covered with bristle-like teeth, the jaws also have an outer row of 5 to 10 smaller fangs. The angle between the vertical and the horizontal branch of the preoperculum is approximately a right angle. The edges of both branches are sawn (exception: the vertical not in D. euryplectrum ). There are several larger spines on both the preoperculum and the gill cover. The pelvic fins stand under or in front of the pectoral fins.

  • Fin formula: dorsal X / 11–12, anal III / 6–8, pectoral 14–19.
  • Branchiostegal rays : 7.
  • Vertebrae: 10 + 14.

Diplectrum species are usually brownish on the back and become increasingly lighter towards the abdomen. The snout and "cheeks" as well as the dorsal and caudal fins are often patterned with yellow, orange or blue lines or dots. All Diplectrum species are hermaphrodites . The female gonads sit in front of the male.
