General Security Directorate
The Directorate General Security ( Arabic إدارة الأمن العام, DMG Idārat al-Amn al-ʿĀmm ) is the most important civil intelligence service in Syria . He is part of the Syrian Interior Ministry .

The secret service comprises three departments:
- Department for Internal Security , in particular responsible for the observation of domestic and foreign extremists,
- Department for External Security , i.e. above all international espionage and counter-espionage ,
- Department of Palestinian Affairs , dealing with Palestinian activities in Syria and Lebanon .
In the 20th century, the service was in competition with the Political Security Department (Idarat al-Amn as-Siyasi), which also belongs to the Syrian Ministry of the Interior .
In 2001, Hisham Bakhtiar became his boss, succeeding Ali Hammoud , who became Minister of the Interior. General Bakhtiar was close to Bashar al-Assad's brother-in-law Assef Shawkat . At the end of the 20th century, Ali Houri was director of Idarat al-Amn al-Amm.
The General Security Directorate reports to Chatib Prison in Damascus.
