Dirk Ayelt Kooiman

Dirk Ayelt Kooiman (born January 3, 1946 in Amsterdam ; † October 2, 2018 there ) was a Dutch writer .

Life

Kooiman was born in 1946 as the son of a theologian in Amsterdam and grew up there. There he also studied philosophy and history. In 1968 he co-founded the magazine "Soma" and was its editor. After the magazine was discontinued in 1972, Kooiman founded the literary magazine "De Revisor" together with the Dutch writer Thomas Graftdijk in 1974 and worked until 1993 as its editor.

In 1971, Kooiman's first book of narratives appeared with Manipulationsen . In 1973 Kooiman published the novel A Romance . His best-known book is the documentary novel Montyn from 1982, in which Kooiman described the life of the graphic artist Jan Montyn. Montyn fought alongside the Germans during World War II . The book was published in German in 2006.

Kooiman also wrote several scripts, including the film adaptation of György Konrád's novel The Visitor .

Kooiman is considered to be one of the most important representatives of "academism", which emphasizes the constructed artificiality of literature. Kooiman's main characters are often men who find themselves and their relationship to reality problematic. Doubt and uncertainty are a constant part of their lives. In his books, Kooiman played with time and different narrative perspectives to emphasize the alienation of his characters.
