Dirk Böndel (* 1955 ) is a German historian and has been the director of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin since 2004 .

Life

Böndel studied philosophy , psychology and mathematics at the TU Berlin . He then studied history of science and technology at the same university and received his doctorate in this area. Böndel's professional career at the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin began in 1983 as a scientific trainee , since 1987 he has headed the shipping department there , was appointed deputy director in 2000 and acting director of the museum in 2003. In the latter role, he led the house out of severe internal turbulence, initiated an ambitious reform process and, at the same time, as curator, designed the shipping exhibition, which opened in December 2003 and with which the museum was able to significantly increase its visitor numbers. Mainly due to the increased collective bargaining agreement in the public sector, the museum had a budget deficit of over 300,000 euros in 2007, as a result of which it had to lay off around 50 of the formerly over 200 museum employees.
