Dirty Kanza

The Dirty Kanza is a place held annually bike race in rural Cowley County in Kansas . The race, also known as the Gravel Grinder , is held almost entirely on gravel roads and paths over a distance of 200 miles. The drivers use mountain bikes , gravel bikes or cyclocross bikes.

The Dirty Kanza 200 leads the riders on a circuit, starting in the small town of Emporia over the Flint Hills through the county. The fastest drivers cover the distance of 200 miles (321.9 kilometers) in 12 hours. The drivers have to go to a series of checkpoints. At the same time, races for shorter distances from 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) take place.

In 2004 the Dirty Kanza took place for the first time. 36 local drivers started on the 200-mile circuit over gravel roads, but most of them did not reach the destination. In the beginning, 50 percent of the starters managed to finish the race in good years. Over time and with the increasing popularity of cyclocross and gravel bikes, more and more riders took part and Dirty Kanza became known throughout the US. Meanwhile, the event is also of economic importance for the region.

In 2017, 2000 drivers took part in Dirty Kanza . In 2018 the starters included such prominent athletes as Jens Voigt , Sven Nys and Ted King .
