The Discovery was a flyboat, 20 tons in size and 38 feet in length, owned by the British East India Company . The ship was built before 1602. It took part in six expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage .
The Discovery was the smallest of three ships that took part in the voyage under the leadership of Christopher Newport , which resulted in the establishment of Jamestown in the new colony of Virginia in 1607 . When Newport returned to London , he left the Discovery for use by the colonists.
Replicas of the Discovery and its larger sister ships, the Susan Constant and the Godspeed, are located on the James River at Jamestown Settlement (formerly the Jamestown Festival Park ), adjacent to the Jamestown National Historic Site .
A new Discovery was built in Boothbay Harbor , Maine and launched in September 2006. The current replica in Jamestown was shipped from Jamestown to the UK for a tour to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, where it was shown, among other places, in the museum in Docklands in London.
In May 2007 the United States Postal Service issued the first 41-cent First Class postage stamp depicting Susan Constant , Godspeed and Discovery .
