Frank-Rainer Withulz (born June 14, 1948 in Sachsendorf ) is a former football player in the GDR Oberliga for FC Vorwärts Berlin / Frankfurt / O. In 1965 he won the UEFA youth tournament with the national youth team.

Career

Withulz was trained as a soccer player in the company sports club Lok in Cottbus from the age of nine . At the age of 17, he moved to SC Cottbus in 1965 , the then football focus for the southeastern GDR. In the same year, on April 15, he played for the first time in the youth national football team in the framework of the UEFA youth tournament. After five victories in a row, the team had won the tournament (final victory 3: 2 over England). Withulz had played as right-back in all games. Later, twelve more junior internationals and twelve games with the youth national team were added. He also completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith.

Also in 1965, Withulz was used as a 17-year-old in games of the men's team of SC Cottbus, which played in the second-rate GDR league . Together with the successor team Energie Cottbus , he came to 57 GDR league point games by 1968. The 1.74 m tall defender then moved to the upper division and army club FC Vorwärts Berlin, with whom he immediately became football champion. With 23 point games, he had become a regular player in defense in his first league season. The following season 1969/70 brought Withulz a title win. On June 13, 1970 he was the right defender in the team of FC Vorwärts Berlin, which won the GDR soccer cup with a 4-2 win over 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . In addition, his team was runner-up in the league.

Withulz did not get any other titles, especially since the move of FC Vorwärts from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder) heralded the gradual decline of the team. When FC Vorwärts had finished 12th after the 1975/76 season and Withulz was no longer used in the league team, the 28-year-old left the army club after 149 league games and joined the Stahl company sports club in Hennigsdorf , which was part of the GDR League played. Withulz won the season with his new team in 1977, but missed the return to the league in the promotion games. In 1978 he moved one last time to the newly promoted GDR league NARVA Berlin , where he finally ended his football career.
