The Dismal Mountains (English for gloomy mountains ) are a group of Nunatakkern in the East Antarctic Enderbyland . They tower 35 miles southwest of Rayner Peak .
Aerial photographs were taken in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The Australian geodesist Graham Alexander Knuckey (1932–1969) carried out measurements on a dog sled ride from Amundsen Bay to Mawson Station in December 1958. The mountain range is often overcast, which is why it was named.
