Disocactus nelsonii is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the American naturalist Edward William Nelson .

description

Disocactus nelsonii grows richly branched, ascending, then hanging, at the base turning and flattened over it. The main shoots are up to 1.6 meters long. The side shoots appear from the top half of the main shoots. With the exception of the rounded base, they are flattened, lanceolate, dark green and up to 6 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide. The areoles are sometimes provided with a few bristle-like thorns .

The flowers appear individually near the shoot tips. They are curved upwards, purple-pink or red with a purple tinge, tubular-funnel-shaped and are 7 to 8 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Disocactus nelsonii is distributed in the Mexican state of Chiapas , in Guatemala in the administrative district of Chimaltenango at altitudes between 1000 and 2300 meters and in Honduras in the administrative district of Comayagua at altitudes between 1400 and 1500 meters.

It was first described as Epiphyllum nelsonii in 1913 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Karl Hermann Leonhard Lindinger (1879–1965) introduced them to Disocactus in 1942 .

Synonyms are the following species and varieties described: Epiphyllum nelsonii Britton & Rose (1913), Phyllocactus nelsonii (Britton & Rose) Vaupel (1913), Chiapasia nelsonii (Britton & Rose) Britton & Rose (1923), Phyllocactus chiapensis J.A.Purpus (1918) , Chiapasia nelsonii var. Hondurensis (Kimnach) Backeb. (1966) and Disocactus nelsonii subsp. hondurensis (Kimnach) Doweld (2002).

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Disocactus nelsonii var. Hondurensis Kimnach :
    The variety, which is only distributed in Honduras, was described in 1965 by Myron William Kimnach (* 1922).
  • Disocactus nelsonii var. Nelsonii :
    The variety has main shoots up to 1.6 meters long, most of which branch in the upper half. The anthers and scars are yellow.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
