A disqualification ( English Disqualified , DQ , DSQ , DISQ ) is the exclusion of an athlete from a competition . This has different consequences depending on the sport . Causes for a disqualification are mostly violations of competition rules , for example fouls , leaving the competition zone, manipulation attempts or the failure to meet certain qualification standards.
As a rule, the athlete - depending on the violation, the whole team - is excluded from the rest of the competition (see also competition ban ). If a performance or a result is already available, no evaluation will be made or it will be canceled. The comment DSQ or DISQ is then usually entered in the result list.
In athletics running competitions , the rule applies that the first early start leads to exclusion. In swimming - with the exception of individual children's and youth competitions - the run is continued after a false start by an athlete, but the one who started incorrectly is subsequently disqualified (starting rule). It can only be repeated in the situation that the start cannot be carried out properly (several athletes follow the first false start).
In many ball sports , a disqualification means that the athlete concerned is no longer allowed to participate in the game for the remainder of the game ( red card ). Depending on the sport, the disqualification can be designated with a separate term in the rules.
In stage races in cycling , a disqualification can occur if a rider exceeds the time limit. Depending on the level of difficulty of a stage, a percentage of the stage winner time is determined within which the remaining riders must reach the destination. If they fail, they will be excluded from the rest of the process.
In motorsport , a disqualification usually takes place due to identified violations of the technical regulations or due to misconduct in the race. In the latter case, the disqualification is signaled to the respective athlete during the race with a black flag , with which he is requested to return to the pits immediately .
As a rule, the disqualification is pronounced by the responsible referee or a jury . If information about unsportsmanlike behavior or manipulation is only known after the end of a competition, for example through a positive doping test , this can also be expressed afterwards and the result corrected.
